Singapore online citizens slam ‘foreign talent* road rage incident

By Nurul Azliah Aripin | What's buzzing? –

Looks like Singapore has found its new victim of online bashing after a "British" scooter rider was caught on camera flashing his middle finger at a driver while in the midst of making an illegal U-turn.

The video was shared by the driver himself and published on local blog The Real Singapore on 2 May, saying that the "arrogant motorist" had also hit his car after being given a "polite" honk.

"All I did was to give him a polite tap of my horn to signal to him that he is doing an illegal U-turn and that he is blocking the traffic. He could have just acknowledged it and move along, why did he need to intimidate me… I think he is from Britain," said the driver, known as Tay.

The post sparked anti-foreigner sentiments and a stream of profanities among commenters on Facebook, Twitter as well as YouTube.

The silent 41-second clip had also compelled other online citizens to investigate the identity of the rider.

YouTuber Peter Lim revealed the man to be Mark Franklin, the managing director of Piaggio Asia Pacific. This information was backed by another local blog The Unseen Singapore.

Photos taken from Mark Franklin's Facebook profile, which has been deactivated, were also shared in the blog's post.

If the identity is true, could this incident risk Franklin's job like what happened in the Anton Casey saga?

Among the cursing and swearing by online citizens, the all too familiar reaction that this rider is getting has sparked speculations that the saga could be replicated.

"Please blast this out to ALL mainstream media! We need to send this Chow Ah Moh to -- Perth to join Anton Casey!" says an anonymous commenter on The Unseen Singapore.
