Members of Singapore's pioneer generation will benefit from higher subsidies under the Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) from 1 September, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said Saturday evening at the World Family Doctors' Day gala dinner.
As part of the Pioneer Generation Package, those eligible will receive higher subsidies for visits to CHAS general practitioners (GPs) for common illnesses, chronic conditions listed under the Chronic Disease Management Programme (CDMP) and health screenings. Subsidies can also be used at CHAS dental clinics for selected dental services, the ministry said on its website.
After receiving their Pioneer Generation card, which will be delivered to their NRIC-registered addresses by September, they are required to bring it together with their ICs to enjoy the subsidies.
Those suffering from common illnesses such as cough or cold will receive $28.50 subsidy for each visit to the doctor. This amount is higher than the $18.50 subsidy in the blue tier.
They will receive up to $360 in subsidies a year for visits for single chronic conditions, and up to $540 a year for visits relating to more complex chronic conditions.
They can also receive up to $266.50 for individual dental procedures, depending on type of procedure.
Free health screenings can be provided to pioneers who receive invitation letters from the Health Promotion Board (HPB). Those without the letters will receive a $28.50 subsidy for each doctor's consultation for up to two visits a year.
In the minister's speech, Gan also highlighted the evolving role of family doctors in Singapore.
He urged more GPs to join CHAS and aim to double the number of GPs who have access to the National Electronic Health Record (NEHR), which enables sharing of patients across different care sectors, to help facilitate movement of patients.
He also called for the need for family doctors in Singapore to be more competent, preferably in home care as well as transitional care training and experiences.
Gan also hoped for more young doctors in Singapore to be trained in family medicine so as to meet the country's "growing needs", adding that the ministry will continue to work closely with the College of Family Physicians Singapore on this.
