Marina Bay Sands announced the removal of shark fin dishes from menus at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in a release on Wednesday.
As part of its "ongoing commitment to protect the environment", the integrated resort will no longer serve shark fin dishes at events held at the convention centre, including MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, exhibitions). Lavish weddings have also taken place at the venue.
The selected seafood served at MICE events will be sourced from suppliers that "fish or farm responsibly", they said. Environmentally-conscious guests will also be able to choose dishes from MBS' Green Harvest Menu, which features ingredients sourced locally so as "to reduce food miles".
Food miles refer to the distance to which the food is transported from the time of its production.
The integrated resort said that the move is part of the company's "global sustainability strategy", called Sand ECO360, to push for more responsible business operations in the area of "green buildings, environmentally responsible operations, green meetings and sustainability education and outreach".
Apart from removing shark fin from menus, MBS will also encourage its tenants to adopt sustainable practices, including recycling and reducing food wastage.
MBS said that it is also the first venue in Southeast Asia to obtain the ISO 20121 Sustainable Events Management Certification.
