3 in 5 motorists feel driving in Singapore is unsafe: survey

By Nurul Azliah Aripin | Yahoo Newsroom –

A whopping 60 per cent of motorists believe that driving on Singapore roads is unsafe, according to survey findings released by AXA Insurance on Tuesday.

450 Singapore motorists made up mainly of private car owners as well as motorcyclists, taxi drivers and goods vehicles drivers took part in the survey.

Most of the respondents (72 per cent) said a rise in the number of "aggressive" drivers as the main reason for this.

Other dangerous driving behaviours in Singapore mentioned include:
•    Drink driving
•    Texting
•    Checking devices for updates and notifications
•    Answering without hands free kit
•    Overtaking, turning or switching lanes without signaling
•    Tailgating

Driving through amber light and driving at 10 km/hr above the speed limit are the most frequently committed offence in Singapore, according to the survey, with half of the respondents admitted to driving through amber light.

For those who confessed to tailgating, a majority (70 per cent) blamed the vehicles in front of them for driving "too slowly", causing them to appear as if they were tailgating.

Two other popular reasons for tailgating include rushing for time and trying to overtake another vehicle.

Among the respondents who admitted they failed to signal when overtaking or switching lanes, many of them (56 per cent) said it was because they "had forgotten" to do so. Another 45 per cent said it is because "there is little traffic on the road".

In contrast to the survey findings, local celebs who attended the media briefing as part of the launch for the AXA Drive mobile app said Singapore roads are still safe when compared to cities such as Jakarta and Bangkok.

Television host Allan Wu said Singapore roads are safer compared to the ones in India, while blogger Xia Xue said Singapore drivers are lucky as they are free from experiencing extreme weather conditions on the roads.
