Singapore's non-oil domestic exports slip 3.3 per cent in July

Singapore reported a surprise fall in November non-oil domestic exports, indicating the strong recovery in October's electronics shipments was a Christmas blip while raising deep concerns about the city-state's pharmaceutical sector. Trade agency International Enterprise Singapore (IE Singapore) said on December 17, 2013 non-oil domestic exports fell 8.8 percent in November from a year ago, surprising economists whose median estimate was for a rise of 4.3 percent. Singapore's non-oil domestic exports (NODX) continued to contract in July, as the manufacturing sector continues to underform and struggle amidst restructuring and stricter foreign worker policies.

Non-oil re-exports, which is a good gauge of wholesale trade services, also reverted to a contraction.

OCBC, Singapore's second-biggest lender, on Tuesday posted a 54 percent rise in quarterly profit, beating expectations thanks to brisk loan growth and a strong performance from its insurance unit. Ebola health workers battle death, heat, rumours

Liberian officials fear Ebola could soon spread through the capital's largest slum after residents raided a quarantine center for suspected patients and took items including blood-stained sheets and mattresses. The violence in the West Point slum occurred late Saturday and was led by residents angry that patients were brought from other parts of the capital to the holding center, Tolbert Nyenswah, assistant health minister, said Sunday. Doctors and nurses fighting Ebola in West Africa are working 14-hour days, seven days a week, wearing head-to-toe gear in the heat of muddy clinics. Agonizing death is the norm. The hellish conditions aren't the only problem: Health workers struggle to convince patients they're trying to help them, not hurt them.

Rumors are rife that Western aid workers are importing Ebola, stealing bodies or even deliberately infecting patients. Winning trust is made harder by a full suit of hood, goggles, mask and gown that hides their faces.
